v1.30.23 – Switch

So in my last post, I talked about the additions to my homelab that I had purchased. All great, huh?

Yeah…I though so too…

Rewind

1.29.23: I got my new switch and other required things. Mikrotik makes good products. I won’t fault them there…configuration, for a n00b, however, not so intuitive…7 hours later, I had my VLANs routing properly…but hey, $200 switch vs. $800 Ubiquiti. You get what you pay for…the pains of moving to Enterprise hardware.

Today

So my new server got delivered today! Yay!!! Or so I thought. As with any new hardware that I purchase, the first thing I do is review the item to ensure it’s what I ordered.

The server was a Dell PowerEdge T620. I made a mistake…it has 3.5in drive bays, not 2.5. Okay, minor inconvenience, but we can work through that. Cancel the Amazon order, and get the right drive caddies. Done.

The glaring issue when I open it…there are zero, I repeat, ZERO system fans in the machine. No CPU fans, no chassis fans, literally, the only fans in the machine are those within the PSUs…come onnnnnn. Not only that, but it said 96GB of RAM, installed is 92GB…in 4GB DIMMs…eye roll.

Now, the RAM, I can get over. 4GB, no big deal. After all, I have 256GB getting delivered tomorrow. But FANS??? Like the system is useless without them. It crashed on the BIOS because there is zero air flow.

Moving forward

Needless to say, I have messaged the eBay seller. Requesting FANS or a refund. And sought clarification the RAM snafu. Sure the pictures say 92GB, but the listing say 96…where’s my 4GB extra…

We shall see what they say. 😶 Until next time…
